Immediately After Thigh Lift Surgery
After your thighplasty, expect your thighs to be heavily bandaged and wrapped in compression garments to prevent your incisions from opening up. You will also have drains in place to prevent blood and fluid accumulation in your operative site.
At this point, sitting is not allowed as this position can apply too much pressure on your incisions, preventing them from healing fully.
Instead, your nurses will advise you on which positions will work best for you as you heal, whether you underwent an inner thigh lift, spiral thigh lift, or medial thigh lift.
First 24 Hours After Thigh Lift Surgery
You’ll feel your anesthesia wearing off within the first 24 hours post-op. This will make you feel sore, but your plastic surgeon will prescribe you with painkillers to help manage any pain and discomfort. Applying ice to your operative area may help numb the pain and minimize bruising.
Still, you won’t be allowed to take any aspirin or ibuprofen drugs to relieve pain, as these can increase your risk of bleeding.
A liquid diet is advised for the first few hours after your thigh lift surgery as the anesthesia after-effects may make you feel nauseous. Afterward, you will be asked to stick to a low-sodium diet to help reduce swelling. Two Weeks After Thigh Lift Surgery

Six to Eight Weeks After Thigh Lift Surgery

If you don’t have a regular exercise routine, you may start with light exercises, such as the following:
- Wall push-ups. This exercise enhances your upper body strength. As the lighter version of a push-up, it isn’t physically demanding and can be accomplished by putting your palms flat against the wall shoulder-width apart, slowly bending your elbows and lowering your upper body towards the wall, and then exhaling as you push off the wall.
- Reverse straight leg raise. To do this simple leg exercise, lie down on a flat surface and bring one knee towards your chest. Return to your original position and repeat with your other leg.
- Curl-ups. Instead of doing vigorous sit-ups, you may do this lighter version that doesn’t require you to pull your body all the way up. Lie down on a flat surface, lift your shoulders off the ground, and go back to your original position.
- Back extension. To target your back muscles, lie down on your stomach. Slowly raise your head while arching your back and pushing up to your elbows. Return to the starting point and repeat.
- Lying outer thigh lifts. You can target your hips and outer thighs with lying outer thigh lifts. It is especially helpful if you had a medial thigh lift. To do this exercise, lie on one side with your lower arm extended and your head resting on it. Lift your upper leg, hold for about two seconds, then return to starting position. Repeat this on the other side.
- Inner thigh leg lifts. Strengthen your inner thigh muscles after your inner thigh lift with inner thigh leg lifts. Start by lying on one side with your lower arm extended and your head resting on it. Bend your upper leg in front of your body and lift your lower leg toward the ceiling. Press it up for two seconds, and then slowly lower the leg and repeat on the other side.
- Light dumbbell exercises. At this point, you may also lift weights that are less than five pounds. Focus on maintaining your upper body strength first and avoid putting too much pressure on your thighs and legs.
When going back to your regular exercise regimen, make sure that you start with light activities and gradually transition to more strenuous activities. Avoid contact sports that put you at risk for injury for about four to six months. If you experience pain or swelling, stop immediately and consult your plastic surgeon for more guidance.
Three Months After Thigh Lift Surgery
By this time, your scars should have already faded, although they will continue to diminish in appearance in the months to come.
You may start exposing your thighs to sunlight, provided that you apply at least an SPF 15 sunscreen. Don’t forget to reapply every half hour or so.
One Year After Thigh Lift Surgery
Twelve months after your thigh lift surgery, you should have completely healed from your plastic surgery. Swelling should be gone by now, allowing you to enjoy the end results of your thigh lift. Your thigh lift scars will have faded considerably and become almost inconspicuous, although they will never completely disappear.
