One of the most common questions that we encounter here on Face + Body Cosmetic Surgery is, what makes the Mermaid Lift different from other similar procedures, like the Mommy Makeover and lower body lift?
Our signature treatment is often lined up with these two surgeries since they are all geared towards women who recently underwent massive weight loss and are not left with a great amount of sagging skin.
It can be a bit difficult to choose which one will give you the results that you want to achieve. But just to help you compare the three, here are the things that you need to know about the Lower Body Lift, Mommy Makeover, and Miami Mermaid Lift.
Lower Body Lift
Also known as a belt lipectomy, the Lower Body Lift is a set of procedures designed to tighten and sculpt the buttocks, hips, abdomen, and thighs. Its primary goal is to get rid of sagging skin that may have resulted from dramatic weight loss due to dieting, pregnancy, or bariatric surgery. Some even do this as a precedent to an Upper Body Lift.
Aside from having your contour sculpted, the Lower Body Lift also prevents other complications that may result from an overhanging skin, such as painful chafing, rashes, and infections. This procedure will not only improve your self-esteem and appearance but also keep your health and hygiene in check.

The Lower Body Lift is usually a combination of a tummy tuck, thigh lift, and butt lift. It starts with a tummy tuck incision that extends completely around the lower torso, which allows your surgeon to execute the traditional tummy tuck, as well as lift the thighs and tighten the buttocks. Your incisions will be closed in multiple layers over drains to control stretching and swelling. Deep support sutures within the underlying tissues help to form the newly shaped contours. Sutures, skin adhesives, or tapes may be used to close the skin incisions.
The Lower Body Lift may or may not be combined with liposuction, depending on which can achieve the best possible contour. An inner thigh lift may also be added to the mix, especially if your abdomen no longer requires contouring.
It is important to remember that the Lower Body Lift is not an alternative weight loss treatment. Because the Lower Body is lifted and suspended to the skin closure, excessive heaviness in the thighs and buttocks may not give you long-lasting results. That is why you need to achieve a certain weight first before you undergo a lower body lift. This can be done through diet and exercise or liposuction.
Just as the name implies, the Mommy Makeover is a combination of procedures aimed to remedy your postpartum appearance. While pregnancy and childbirth are joyful times in every mother's life, it also makes your body change a lot—most often in ways that you do not want it to. After giving birth to your child, your body has put on extra weight, gained a fair share of stretch marks, and been left with a pair of saggy breasts. If you feel that it takes too much time and effort to get back to your pre-pregnancy body, then you might want to try a Mommy Makeover.
Unlike the Lower Body Lift, the Mommy Makeover does not focus on the lower body alone. It usually combines the tummy tuck with a breast-related procedure, such as the breast augmentation or breast lift, to achieve the best results.
You can opt for various types of tummy tucks, depending on how much work you need in your abdominal area. A complete tummy tuck exposes all abdominal tissues, paving the way for easy contouring by the surgeon. There is also the mini tummy tuck, which targets fat deposits located below the navel and smaller patches of excess skin. There is also the circumferential tummy tuck, which is most often used in body lift and Mommy Makeover procedures.
While some mothers already experience good results from either a breast lift or breast augmentation, many of them have excess skin that requires both procedures. The main focus of the Mommy Makeover is correcting the abdominal and breast areas, both of which have been stretched during pregnancy. At times, liposuction can also be added to the mix.
The Miami Mermaid Lift has specifically been developed for individuals who have undergone massive weight loss—either through lifestyle change or bariatric surgery—allowing them the opportunity to get rid of their saggy skin and uncover the slim body that hides underneath. Surgeons, Dr. Nick Masri and Dr. Mark Broudo have specifically designed Face + Body Cosmetic Surgery’s signature treatment to reproduce the shape and curves found on mermaids, giving you the chance to sport a slim waist, rounded hips, and curvy backside that tapers into a slim fishtail.
Strictly speaking, the Mermaid Lift is a more refined version of the Lower Body Lift, as it concerns itself with the same areas that the Lower Body Lift remedies. However, some crucial aspects are not usually addressed in a traditional Lower Body Lift, leaving patients disappointed with the results. The Mermaid Lift seeks to correct that by adding one crucial procedure to the usual tummy tuck, thigh lift, and butt lift done in a Lower Body Lift. The Mermaid Lift also involves some form of buttocks augmentation, giving more emphasis on your cinched waist and flaring hips.
What the Mermaid Lift does is accentuate the waistline to create a more feminine flare at the hips. It also flattens the abdomen via a tummy tuck, hence improving its contour and definition. Even the pubic area is lifted in order to create a smoother transition to the lower abdomen. The bellybutton is also redefined to complement your new bottleneck waistline. More shape and volume is added to both the buttocks and the lateral thighs. Finally, the Mermaid Lift cinches and redirects the skin to reduce or even completely eliminate the appearance of cellulite in these areas.
In general, the Mommy Makeover is best for mothers who want to achieve the pre-pregnancy state of their breasts and abdomen. Meanwhile, both the Lower Body lift and Mermaid Lift are concerned with contouring the lower body, with the latter having a bit of an advantage because of the addition of a buttocks augmentation.
