Common Procedures You Should Consider Combining with a Neck Lift

A neck lift surgery is one of the best ways to help you achieve a smooth, slim, and youthful-looking neck. But it is very seldom that a person only chooses to get a neck lift without any other enhancements added.

In fact, a lot of patients choose to combine the neck lift with other procedures involving the face in order to achieve a naturally balanced look. After all, a beautifully-contoured neck is useless if your face does not match it.

If you are thinking of undergoing a neck lift surgery, here are four of the most common procedures that you can combine with it to dramatically improve and rejuvenate your appearance.

To make it easier for you, we have come up with a short checklist of questions that you should ask your surgeon before a Neck Lift procedure.

Neck Liposuction

Perhaps the most common procedure that is usually combined with a neck lift is liposuction. In cases where there is extra fat in the neck area–like in a double chin–liposuction is automatically done. It removes fullness underneath the chin and refines your jawline, helping you achieve a better defined and more graceful neckline.

Liposuction of the neck is usually recommended for younger patients, usually between 20 and 50 years of age, as they have better skin elasticity than older patients. This is necessary for the skin to contract smoothly and evenly after liposuction and not produce excess sagging skin.

For many patients, neck liposuction is a relatively quick procedure, only necessitating local anesthesia. Your surgeon makes one or two small incisions concealed beneath the chin or behind the ears. A small liposuction cannula is inserted through these incisions, removing excess fat and sculpting a natural contour on your chin and neck.

After the procedure, you will be asked to wear a special supportive chin strap for about three to four days. You may be able to return to work a week after surgery. Typically, you may be able to resume full activity after two weeks if no complications arise.

The results of a neck lift combined with neck liposuction are permanent, as long as you maintain a stable weight after the procedure. Swelling and bruising are normal right after surgery, but they usually subside within 10 to 14 days.

A facelift surgery lifts and firms your sagging facial tissues, smooths deep folds, and tightens your deep facial tissues, hence restoring a more naturally youthful facial appearance.

It is very seldom that a surgeon performs a facelift without incorporating some element of a neck lift or contouring, and vice versa. Combining these two procedures addresses the presence of jowl, sagging cheeks, and lax neck tissues in one go.

Basically, there are two types of facelift procedures that can be combined with your neck lift. The standard or traditional facelift addresses moderate to advanced aging around the mid-face and neck. Your surgeon makes an incision behind the hairline, starting near the temples and going around the front of the ear–all hidden in your natural folds. Your surgeon then repositions the deeper tissues beneath the skin and removes any excess skin to smooth out creases and eliminate sagging skin under the chin.

Another type is the mini-facelift, which is best for patients who exhibit only a mild degree of jowl and sagging skin. It is considered to be less invasive because it makes use of shorter incisions typically located along the hairline above each ear or in the natural creases surrounding the ear.

While nothing can stop the normal aging process, getting a facelift with a neck lift will make you look years younger than what you really are.

Chin augmentation

With the chin’s proximity to the neck, it is but natural for some patients to also request a chin augmentation together with their neck lift to better refine the neckline. Chin augmentation adds proportion and definition to a weak or receding chin and provides balance to other facial features.

Though there are several ways to perform a chin augmentation surgery, by far the most popular technique is the placement of chin implants. This procedure typically lasts for 45 minutes up to an hour and a half, depending on several factors. Local or general anesthesia may be used.

Your surgeon inserts a custom-fit chin implant typically using the same incisions used in your neck lift and liposuction. Pre-formed chin implants, usually made from GORE-TEX or silicone and shaped like a narrow chin guard of a sports helmet, can also be used, although they are typically carved for a custom fit. Your surgeon will typically demonstrate their cosmetic benefits through computer imaging, allowing you to see what you will look like after the chin augmentation and neck lift.

To further balance the proportions of your face and neckline, you may want to also combine your neck lift with rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose lift. It helps improve the shape, size, and symmetry of your nose, bringing it into better proportion with the rest of your face. Reshaping your nose while also improving your jawline will not only dramatically enhance the sense of balance on your face, but also improve your overall appearance. Needless to say, it can be a rewarding and life-changing procedure.

There are many changes that you can make on your nose, including straightening a crooked nose bridge, reducing the length of your nasal tip, narrowing a wide nose, restoring nose symmetry, and even opening up blocked nasal passages to correct breathing problems.

For patients who require extensive nose reshaping, an open rhinoplasty may be done. It involves a small incision made under the nasal tip between the nostrils. This allows your cosmetic surgeon to completely access your nasal structures and sculpt your nose into your desired shape. Those who only need minor nose adjustments can get a closed rhinoplasty, where incisions are made inside the nostrils.

Combining your neck lift with other procedures is a great way to improve your overall facial appearance with just one trip to the operating table. It reduces your preparation and recovery time as compared to getting these procedures separately.
