Liposuction: Are You a Candidate?

Liposuction is a procedure that can yield excellent, long-lasting results to get rid of fat deposits that have not responded to dietary changes or physical activity. In Miami, FL, like in most other states across the country, liposuction is the third most popular plastic surgery procedure. Individuals of all ages can be candidates for liposuction

but they must meet a set of criteria.

The best candidates are those who are in excellent health and are within 25 pounds of their ideal body weight. Both men and women can be candidates for liposuction as long as they are over 18 years of age and meet the health criteria. Potential candidates will also need to have reasonable expectations about the outcome of their procedure. Individuals with extraordinary expectations will often be asked to take some additional time to think about their desired outcomes before they are re-evaluated and scheduled for their procedure.

To make it easier for you, we have come up with a short checklist of questions that you should ask your surgeon before a Liposuction.

Let’s get more specific. Here are the general requirements for liposuction.

  • Patients must be at least 18 years of age;
  • Pregnant or lactating women are not candidates for liposuction;
  • Individuals with certain health conditions may not be good candidates for liposuction (ask your surgeon);
  • Individuals who take blood-thinners such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) must discontinue their medication for a period before and after their procedure; and,
  • Individuals with an allergy to lidocaine cannot have liposuction as lidocaine anesthesia is used during the procedure.

Realistic Expectations

Liposuction has its limitations. It is not an effective weight loss tool, nor is it a cure for cellulite or stretch marks. An individual with the expectation of dramatic physical change will likely be disappointed; however, an individual looking for a subtle yet recognizable change to the tone and smoothness of the contours of their body will likely be pleased with their results. Individuals with youthful, elastic skin will experience the best results, as liposuction relies on the elasticity of the skin to create the new contour. Older patients may require a lift to the area being sculpted to achieve their desired result.
