You may be going to Miami for plastic surgery, but it doesn’t mean that you can no longer enjoy the sights and sounds this tropical city has to offer.
After all, Miami is a world-class tourist destination showcasing a variety of beaches, restaurants, and theme parks – and it would be a shame to miss them all during your medical vacation.
Check out the following places that you should visit during your Miami medical vacation:
Miami Beach
If there’s one thing that Miami’s famous for, it’s the beaches.
Miami is home to the world-famous Miami Beach, which is located on an island connected to the mainland by a series of beaches.
At the southern end of the Miami Beach is South Beach, which is always mobbed with tourists because of its party beach vibe.
Stroll around and enjoy hanging out with other vacationers.
Key Biscayne
Want a more low-key and tranquil beach? Head on to Key Biscayne, the northernmost island in the Florida Keys.
It has a waterfront park and a cycling path, and at the same time boasts of a gorgeous view of Miami.
You may also visit Crandon Park at the east end of Key Biscayne if you’re up for some picnic and barbecue.
Art Deco District
Marvel at historical buildings from the ‘30s as you take a stroll along the Art Deco District. Many of these buildings front Ocean Drive, giving a spectacular view of the beach and ocean.
Ocean Drive
One of the most popular streets for sightseeing, Ocean Drive runs along the oceanfront of Miami Beach, passing South Beach and the historic Art Deco buildings.
You can find the best restaurants along this strip.
Bayfront Park
Located on the east side of Biscayne Boulevard, Bayfront Park was redesigned in the 1980s and now features the electronically-controlled Pepper Fountain, which is a major tourist attraction.
You will also find three important monuments in Bayfront Park: The Torch of Friendship, the World War II Memorial, and the Challenger Memorial – all commemorating different events in the United States.
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens
This sprawling Italian estate on Biscayne Bay was originally the winter home of James Deering, an industrialist in the early 20th century. It is composed of 34 rooms filled with European antiques and four hectares of garden with numerous fountains, pools, and gazebos.
Little Havana
In Miami’s Little Havana, you’ll see the legacy left behind by the thousands of Cubans who migrated to Miami during Fidel Castro’s time.
The Mediterranean-style houses at Calle Ocho are reminiscent of the ‘60s Cuban vibe with their rocking chairs, fragrant tobacco scents, and the hum of Latin music.
Jungle Island
If you’re an animal lover, you may find comfort in Jungle Island – a wildlife habitat, bird sanctuary, and botanical garden rolled in one.
It boasts of over 1,000 species of birds and 2,000 varieties of exotic plants. It also has a variety of animals like tigers, alligators, monkeys, baboons, tortoises, flamingoes, and orangutans, some of which participate in daily shows.
Miami Seaquarium
Considered as one of the favorite family attractions in Miami, the Miami Seaquarium is a 15-hectare marine park featuring dolphins, killer whales, seals, and other marine animals.
You can drop by the Seaquarium and catch one of its daily shows featuring these marine inhabitants, or you can also watch its shark and manatee exhibits.
Everglades National Park
If you’re up for a short drive outside Miami, you can visit the Everglades National Park, which is a basically a swampland measuring 1.5 million acres.
The park is home to crocodiles, alligators, snakes, and various types of birds. You can join walking trails and boardwalks for wildlife viewing, as well as participate in the ranger-guided bike tour of the Shark Valley trail.
Wynwood Arts District
If you’re a lover of the arts, feast your eyes on the six dozen exhibits displayed in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District.
You have plenty of galleries to choose from, starting from private collections like the Rubell Family Collection and Margulies Collection, down to works by popular local artists like David Castillo and Fredric Snitzer.
Key West
Up for a long drive? You may want to visit Key West just before you fly back to your hometown.
The quirky town of Key West was once home to Ernest Hemingway, who moved to the town after his wife’s pregnancy in Paris.
Lincoln Road
Once an under-the-radar artists’ hangout, Lincoln Road is now home to several upscale retail stores where you can shop to your heart’s content.
You may also view some artwork in glass-walled studio galleries at the Art Center. If you love books, you can browse some in Books & Books, Miami’s literary mainstay. Cap off your day with live jazz and blues music at Upstairs at the Van Dyke Café.
